Melon Felons

Meet the Team

Since 2007, the Melon Felons have been hosting an annual auction and walking in the Breast Cancer 3-Day to raise money for research and awareness. We came together as a group of individuals affected by cancer in one way or another – many of us affected by our co-captain and founder, Cindy Betts, who has fought (and won) twice! Each year, we continue to raise more money, host bigger events, and gain a larger group of women walking for the cure. Together, we’ve raised nearly $130,000, and hope to near $200,000 by the end of this year. Whether you’re personally affected by this disease, or know and want to support one of our teammates, please consider getting involved by donating or attending our annual auction!

Let Us Introduce Ourselves...

Restaurant Owner/CFO - Woodinville, WA

I walk (for my seventh time!) because I don’t want my daughter to ever have to go through what I have gone through. I want to make a difference and tell the world that you can beat this disease. I’m not afraid to tell anyone that wants to know what I have gone through. I walk because I don’t want anyone else to get that phone call – the one where the first thing that comes to your mind is your family and the second thought is death. My goal for the walk is to have fun, not worry about the miles, and meet people! My goal for the auction is to raise twice as much as we did last year, I want it to be something everyone talks about for a very long time. My role models are strong women who use their potential for good, like Melinda Gates and Oprah. I’m passionate about my family, fighting this disease, traveling, working hard, dachshunds, crafting, and Brooks & Dunn! In my glass: Lemon drop!

This is my fourth year as a walker and I feel honored to be able to contribute to the fight against breast cancer.  I walk for many people who are dear to me, but at the top of my list are Cindy and Janet: two brave and amazing women who deserve my love and support, and who inspire me to do my best to fight for them. I also walk for every woman – and man – who has battled this disease and for the people who love them.  Participating in the 3-day walk is one of the best things I’ve ever done – besides producing three great boys! – and I’m hopeful that we will somehow make a difference.  Favorite drink?  Jorge’s Lemon Drop! Music? Currently in my car I have Adele, Cat Stevens, Josh Ritter and Neil Diamond.

I’ve walked twice in the past, and continue to support this great cause for my mom, who is a two-time survivor. My goal for the auction is to grow it into one of the state’s great yearly philanthropic events.

I do this to be part of something bigger, join with women I love, and to help find a cure for breast cancer. I don’t want my children and grandchildren to go through what others before me have endured. I’m passionate about making a difference, giving back, and raising awareness. My role models include my mom, lifelong friend Ginger, my sister Debbi and daughters, Teagan and Katelyn. I’m currently listening to Michael Buble and Andre Bocelli in the car, and Jack Johnson here at the computer with a glass of red wine while working on our procurement list!

I’m walking (for a fifth time!) to support those I know and those I haven’t met to help fight this awful unfair disease. It’s hard to watch people you know and love fighting the biggest fight of their life. By being part of the 3-day, it empowers me to feel like I’m doing something to help support my most courageous friends; my true heroes. This year’s goal for the walk is to not lose pinky toenails, and to enjoy a pomegranate martini afterwards!

I participate in the Breast Cancer 3-Day for all women. We need to find a cure for this incredibly devastating cancer! My biggest goal is to have an even bigger and better turn out for our auction this year! My role models are my mom, my aunt and my grandma; they are all amazing women. I’m passionate about my pets, wine, my family & friends. Currently listening to Kings of Leon.

I walk (for a second time!) because I can. I have my health for which I am very thankful. I look forward to helping make the auction an amazing success, and to not only completing the walk, but having a memorable and fun time. I am passionate about my family (2 grown boys and a daughter-in-law to be that I am crazy about), knitting and my workouts (lifting and lunchtime hill/stair walks with Cass and Christy). On the radio: Oldies with a cold beer or something sweet, like an Absolut Lemonade.

I am a two-year survivor, have a friend battling the disease right now and a friend who is a one-year survivor. My goal is to raise more than the required $2300 to help fight this awful disease. I’m excited for the wonderful feeling that I got when I completed the first 3-day walk, but am most fearing rain! My role models are all of the brave women and men who have had to battle this disease. They were my strength when I was going through it. I am passionate about walking, health, my family, my dog (Benny), my husband and kids. I listen to XM 80′s music on the radio. 80′s were the best; lot’s of great memories! I like any fruity drink – ie Margaritas, Mai Tai’s, Electric Iced Tea.

I grew up in “girl world.” I have sisters, step-daughters, a niece, and most of my cousins are women. I went to an all-girl high school and lived in a women’s dorm in college. The first time breast cancer touched my life was when a very close college friend was diagnosed. Then it was my college roommate’s sister. Now it’s a college friend’s mother. Sometimes in life bad things happen and there’s nothing you can do about it, but breast cancer isn’t one of those things. Walking 60 miles to raise money for research is a lot easier than undergoing chemotherapy or hearing the news that some one you love has been diagnosed with breast cancer. I’m happy to walk.

I am honored to be walking with my cousin Christy Franklin, who endured her battle with grace, poise, and determination – a true role model. I am a first time walker in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day. I begin this trek with excitement and do hope that my feet feel the same way about it. I am most excited to feel like I have done something tangible to eradicate this disease. I am blessed to have two children: Stephanie (18) and Carl (17) and my terrific husband, Jason. We just celebrated our 25th anniversary! Another great joy in our lives are our two pugs Curly and Sally! I love any music by Michael W. Smith or Keith Green, and if you were to offer me a double tall soy latte, I’d be a happy girl!
